Okay friends, this is it. I’m doing it. I’m waving the white flag of surrender. You hear that, winter? You got me. I’ve had enough. UNCLE!!!
(From last year’s Nemo Blizzard. Those mounds on the right are cars…Not this year, but you get the drift)
In the last week, we’ve had three snow storms. THREE. I can honestly say I don’t remember a winter this bad in a long time. In the last 3-4 weeks, I’d say there’s been one day each week where it’s safer for me to work from home than drive to work because of snow. While I don’t mind the cold temperatures, it’s the snow amounts that get to me.
The biggest headache of all of this: Boston street parking. I park our car on the street, and while this is normally fine in the Fall/Spring/Summer, every Winter breeds parking anxiety. Will I find a parking spot? Will it be shoveled out? How long will it take me to shovel out? Will I be able to get out of the parking spot once I get in there? Will my car be hit by a plow? Will my car be hit by another car? Will someone steal my parking spot once I shovel out? Since pretty much no one in my neighborhood takes the time to actually dig their car out ALL the way around, we end up with piles of snow that take up valuable parking space. Plus, add the people who have just given winter the big middle finger and have pretty much abandoned their cars to thaw out come Spring. It’s just a nightmare. Yesterday as I was walking to my car to leave for work, I watched a girl tap my car with hers 3 times while she tried to squeeze into a tiny parking spot in front of me. Meanwhile, she gets out of the car as I’m putting Koji in the backseat, doesn’t say boo about it, looks right at me, and unloads her groceries into her apartment. Mind you, there are about 8 other open spots within 10 feet of where she lived. But she HAD to fit into this spot. Thanks b*!tch. This is what this snow is driving us to. No one even cares anymore. I don’t even care anymore! Is it Summer yet?
Anyway, rant over. Onto the food. If you want to read more WIAW posts, head to Peas and Crayons.
Breakfast
There’s something about oatmeal that just makes you feel better on a freezing cold morning. I made my oatmeal with 1 cup water, 1/2 cup quick oats, an egg white stirred in at the end, cinnamon, and 1/2 banana. Topped with more cinnamon, the other 1/2 banana, and almond butter, it was delicious.
Lunch
Same old, same old. A quick salad I ate at my desk while I worked. I also had a Siggi’s yogurt on the side. They were 3 for $5 at Whole Foods this week so I grabbed a bunch.
Snack
After I got out of a meeting, I noticed that the snow was getting pretty bad, so I left the office to try to avoid bad traffic. I picked up Koji from daycare and settled into working from my home office/kitchen table. I was feeling the 3:00 slump, so I had a cappuccino made from my new Keurig Rivo (post to come soon!) Look at that froth! This machine is pretty incredible — that’s almond milk!
I also had a banana and peanut butter around 4:00 as my pre-run fuel.
Post-workout
After a sweaty 5 mile interval run at the gym, I came home and had a glass of BCAA’s to get recovery going. Love this stuff. I was still sore from my workout on Monday, so I knew I needed to add this in to help recover from the run too.
Dinner
Dinner was one of my favorites – salmon. I glazed the salmon in a super simple dijon mustard and honey mixture; mix dijon, honey, crushed garlic, and a little water to taste and then coat the salmon. Bake for 15 minutes at 400 degrees and dinner is served. If I had salmon every day of my life, I would be a happy girl.
